“But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus, in order that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”
Ephesians 2:4-7
“...in order that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.” This is salvation. This is heaven. This is what God has done for us. This is His gift to us in Christ Jesus.
I cannot overstate the grace extended to us by God through Christ Jesus. To be made alive together with Christ, to be raised up with Him, to be seated with Him in the heavenly… it is everything we dream of and more than we can possibly imagine.
The grace of God, the more one studies it, the more one observes it, the more one considers it, the grace of God abounds in magnificence. The words of the Holy Spirit here have the purpose of reassuring those in Christ Jesus of the amazing grace of our God! And they do. They remind us and comfort us in their truth, that even when we were dead in our transgressions, the richness of God’s mercy, the great love with which He loved us, extended to us the favor that we needed, and that we quite literally could not live without. By grace we have been saved!
The surpassing riches of His grace in kindness is unsurpassed in significance in the life of every believer. He is our hope. He is our peace. He is our Redeemer. He is our salvation. A part from Him we are truly lost. Thanks be to God for “being rich in mercy” and bestowing on us the “surpassing riches of His grace”! Glory be to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Amen!
