Thy Will Be Done

"...so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.”

1 Peter 4:1‭-‬2 NASB1995

This passage echoes a few other potent New Testament scriptures regarding the Christian’s new life in Christ Jesus our Savior and Lord. Consider:

"For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus."

Romans 6:10‭-‬11 NASB1995

"Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires."

Galatians 5:24 NASB1995

"...and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

1 Peter 2:24 NASB1995

"Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God… Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry."

Colossians 3:1‭-‬5 NASB1995

"...if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth."

Ephesians 4:21‭-‬22‭, ‬24 NASB1995

Hopefully, by now, we’ve seen not just from these verses, but from our posts all month long, that self-control is about the intense daily focus on doing the will of God. “Thy will be done” must be our daily motto just as it was for Jesus (Matthew 6:10; John 6:28; Matthew 26:42). This is what it means to have “died to sin”, “crucified the flesh”, “lay aside the old self”. The new person in Christ Jesus no longer lives for the passions/lusts of the flesh, but like Christ, lives for the will of Jehovah God!
